Whether you’re moving to a smaller house or to another state, downsizing is necessary.
But it is very tricky; you want to minimize the items you’re taking to the new place, while not wanting to throw out anything you may need later. As tricky as downsizing is, we love to keep it for the last moment.
Do not let yourself be burdened with last minute chaos. Follow these simple tips to easily remove the items you no longer need.
MAKE A LIST
Yes, the first step of downsizing is making a list. Prepare an inventory of all the items you own. Next, imagine if you lost each one of these items in an accident, which of these would you buy first, that is, which items are the ones you need the most. Out of this list, make three additional lists of necessary items, those that are replaceable, and those that you can live without.
For example, if you do not watch TV much, it goes on the third list. Or, if you do watch TV but you can replace it with a smaller on, it goes in the second.
SELL IT AWAY TO EARN SOME CASH
This is really simple; all the items on your third list three goes to the yard sale. Not suitable for a yard sale? Sell it online! There are so many places where you can sell or event trade off your furniture and other household items. The decorative pieces also sell easily and bring in good amount of cash. Use this for moving expenses or to buy replaceable items from the second list. Is there anything that you don’t have, but is absolutely necessary for the new place? Buy those items with this extra cash and keep your savings for future.
LIMIT THE NUMBER
Do you have too many dishes, glasses, chairs and pillows? Keep only the number necessary according to your lifestyle. Sell the rest of the items. You can always give these items away to a charity or a shelter home.
DE-CLUTTER YOUR LIFE
Have multiple drawers full of miscellaneous items that you no longer need? That extra bobby pin, papers, cute packaging, and chocolate boxes must all go out of your very necessary items list. Do not carry any of this clutter with you in the new place.
Downsizing is hard; detaching your favorite items from other stuff is even harder. Be rational, and carry on for your move.
